Welcome to Hillside Presbyterian Church
“Revitalizing Greenville by giving the lost and hurting new life in Christ”
Thank you for your interest in our worshiping community. We’re so glad you’re here.
To give you an introduction to who we are, here is a Brief History:
In founding the church in 1801, Rev. Daniel McLean became the city of Greenville’s first pastor and served until 1840, although he maintained activity in the church until he died in 1855. The first services for Hillside actually took place in Shank’s Tavern on North Front Street. Shortly thereafter moving to a pitched tent on the grounds of St. Michael’s cemetery then called United Presbyterian Cemetery. By around 1802, the church moved into a log building until 1815. In 1815 William Scott donated the lot where the church currently stands. In 1867 the first brick in the construction of the present church was laid with total construction costs of approximately $20,000. In 1947 plans were formulated for a new annex at a cost of $50,000 and was dedicated on May 29, 1949. The annex was named for Dr. W. H. McPeak, serving the church from 1943 to 1947. The church received its new name, Hillside United Presbyterian Church, in 1960. The “United” part of the name was dropped years later.
To this day, Hillside remains ever mindful and ever grateful for its rich heritage of ministry in and to the Greenville Community, and we continue that legacy by supporting foster parents, participating in programs such as Neighbor to Neighbor (building relationships with youth in our neighborhood, collecting food and supporting The Good Shepherd (our local food pantry), all while learning and growing as disciples of Jesus Christ.
We would love to get to know you, so we invite you to connect with us and join us for worship as we study God’s Word together and encourage one another to become the people God has always called us to be.
